Disclosed are sulphonated octadienyl aryl ethers prepared by reacting with sulphonating agents, aryl ethers of formula (I) or (II), in which R<1> is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 8 carbon atoms and 2 double bonds, R<2> is hydrogen or a methyl group; [A] is a group of formula (III), [B] is a group of formula (IV) or (V), R<3> is hydrogen, an alkyl group with 1-9 carbon atoms, a carboxyl group, an ester group with 1-4 carbon atoms in the alcohol component, an aldehyde group or a nitrile group, n is 0 or a number from 1 to 10 and m is 0 or a number from 1 to 10, and the reaction products are neutralized with aqueous bases and hydrolysed. The products exhibit surface-active properties and are suitable for the manufacture of washing and cleaning powders and liquids, as well as hair- and body-care products.
