Creating spectral wells for inserting watermarks in audio signals

1. A method for a machine or group of machines to watermark an audio signal, the method comprising:
receiving the audio signal; receiving a watermark signal including symbols to be inserted in predetermined frequency channels, each of the predetermined frequency channels corresponding to a different frequency range of the audio signal; determining a ratio of (a) amplitude of a symbol to be inserted in one of the predetermined frequency channels over (b) amplitude of the audio signal corresponding to the one of the predetermined frequency channels; when the ratio is below a threshold, creating one or more a spectral wells well on the audio signal by removing one or more portions a portion of the audio signal corresponding to respective one or more of the one of the predetermined frequency channels; and inserting the symbols in respective ones of the predetermined frequency channels including a predetermined frequency channel in which a spectral well was created and a predetermined frequency channel in which a spectral well was not created.
