Loose solid materials being reacted in a horizontally mounted pressure-tight drum of circular cross-section are stirred by tools rotating close to the drum wall at the end of radial arms projecting from an elongated axial shaft extending beyond the drum ends, and driven by an external motor at one end. On passage through the drum end walls the stirrer drive shaft is engaged by known seals surrounded by casings affixed to the end wall exterior. In the case of the shaft end remote from the drive motor, the shaft is hermetically encapsulated by a housing. To prevent prod. escaping along the shaft from the reactor, and to prevent pressure exchange between reactor interior and external atmos., the housing interior is maintained at the same pressure as the reactor interior. A pressure balancing conduit connects these two interiors.
