A method of producing a film-forming water dispersion of styrene terpolymers with n-alkyl acrylanes with chain length of C1-C4 and dibutyl maleinate, to be used as binders in paints for general applications, obtained by the polymerisation of emulsion monomer mixture in the presence of ionic and non-ionic emulsifiers, a buffer and a radical polymerisation initiator, characterized in that into the water phase at polymerisation temperature, directly prior to the addition of the initiator and prior to the start of dosing the mixture of monomers, the mixture of acrylic acid and its alkaline salt is added in the amount of 0.3-1.3 percent by weight in relation to the reaction mass, where the proportion of acid to its salt is 1:0.4-0.7, as well as amid or N-methyl amid of acrylic acid in the amount of 0.25-1.0 percent by weight in relation to the reaction mass.
