A method of obtaining ajmalicine of high purity from plant material, especially from the roots of Catharanthus roseus by means of extraction, characterized in that extraction is carried out at least three times with the use of a aqueous solution of mineral acid with pH 2-3, afterwards acid extract is adsorbed on low-polarity resin until alkaloid bases are fully absorbed, and further resin is rinsed with a aqueous solution of ammonium and desorbed with acetone, which is expelled, and from the extract the fresh ajmalicine sludge is precipitated with the use of the mixture of methyl alcohol and 2 percent aqueous solution of ammonium with the volume proportion of 9-10 : 1, and further methyl alcohol is removed from the sludge by means of crystallization.4.
