Device for separating two flat objects stuck together, in particular mail envelopes in a postal sorting system, in line with a destacking head designed to extract these envelopes one by one from a stack (portion) of envelopes. According to the invention, this device is characterised in that it comprises a continuous-suction unit (13) having a plane face (21) in front of which the two flat objects (2) to be separated move, pressed against this face, a scraper member (14) which is able to move perpendicularly to the plane face in a to-and-fro motion, made up of a casing (15) in which a low pressure is created which is lower than that prevailing in the suction unit, a carriage (25) carrying the casing of the scraper member, means (23, 24, 26) for moving the carriage in order to press the casing against the two objects which are stuck together and held against the plane face of the suction unit and means (20) for automatically withdrawing the carriage, moving it away from the plane face counter to an antagonistic spring (27), in order to separate the flat objects from one another. <IMAGE>
