Appts. to stamp and emboss leather, and leather substitutes, has tools with working edges projecting upwards from the tool base plate. The stencil moves on vertical guides and return units to be moved directly to the tool base plate. Pref. the tool base plate is laid on a lower working plate of a stamping machine for the tool to be operated by an upper pressure plate. The tools are secured to a tool holder plate which is exchangeable but cannot slide sideways in its moulding to the tool base plate. The stencil is mounted to a lower frame which rides on the vertical guides to the tool base plate.
