A method for controlling a combined heating device for space and water heating, comprising a burner, a principal heat exchanger, in which a heat-transfer medium can be heated by the burner, a water heat exchanger, in which water can be heated by the heat-transfer medium, at least one space heat exchanger, which is able to emit heat from the heat-transfer medium to a space, connecting lines between the heat exchangers, in which a two-way valve is accommodated, which in a first position guides heat- transfer medium from the principal heat exchanger through the water heat exchanger, and in a second position through the space heat exchanger. This method comprises the detection of the temperature of the water, the temperature of the space and the temperature of the heat- transfer medium which is fed into the water heat exchanger, switching on the burner when the detected water temperature and/or the detected space temperature is/are below a respective predetermined value, positioning the two-way valve in the first position when the water temperature is below a predetermined level, positioning the two-way valve in the second position when only the detected space temperature is below a predetermined level and, when both the water temperature and the space temperature are below the predetermined levels and the detected temperature of the heat-transfer medium which is fed into the water heat exchanger is above a predetermined level, cyclically positioning the two-way valve in the second position for a first predetermined time and in the first position for a second predetermined time.
