The magnetic recording medium is prepared by (1) coating a magnetic paint obtained by mixing and dispersing ferromagnetic powder, carbon black, grinding agent, additives etc. into a binder solution onto a non-magnetic substrate, (2) orienting, (3) drying, (4) calendering, (5) curing and (6) slitting the film. The magnetic paint is obtained by (a) dissolving a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer containing hydroxy group into a organic solvent, (b) adding a grinding agent and a ferromagnetic powder into the dissolved solution and (c) adding a binder into the mixture (b). The grinding agent is selected from alpha-alumina, chromium oxide or alpha-ferric oxide. The magnetic recording maerial has a good durability and electromagnetic conversion characteristic, and is used for magnetic tapes and magnetic disks.
