Cpds. of formula (I) are new. In (I) Z = (a)-O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO-O-, -SO-N=, -N=, =-O-, -N(O-)2, -N-N(O-)2, =SI=, =C=, -P=, =P-O-, =P-N=, -Si-O-, -O-Si-O-, -PO-, -PO-O-, -PO-O-, -PO-N=, -CO-N= or -CO-O-, or (b) phenyl or pyridyl opt. o-, m- or p-substd. by -(CH2)q-O-, -(CH2)q-S-, -(CH2)1-N=, -(CH2)q-CO-N=, -(CH2)1-CO-O-, -(CH2)q-O-CO-, -(CH2)q-CO- or a gp. of formula (II) or (III); R1 and R2 = H; 1-20C alkylene, opt.with one or more CH2 gps. replaced by O, S, CO, NR, CS, CF, CBr, CCl, C(CN), N(SO2R), N(R)SO2 or SiRR'; 3-8C cycloalkylene, opt. with 1-3 CH2 gps. replaced by O, S, NR, CO, SC, SO2 or SO, provided that O is not next to S or NR and S is not next to NR; a C- or N-terminally bonded proteinogenic amino acid, opt. N- or carboxy-protected; or a 5-20C terpene; or two R1 gps. and/or two R2 gps. in two pref. nonadjacent chain members may form a gp. of formula (IV). (R3 and R4 = H; 1-20C alkylene, opt. with one or more CH2 gps. replaced by O, S, CO, NR, CS, CF, CBr, CCl, C(CN), N(SO2R), N(R)SO2 or SiRR'; or 3-8C cycloalkylene, opt. with 1-3 CH2 gps. replaced by O, S, NR, CO, SC, SO2 or SO (with the above provisos)) X and Y = H, OH, COR, NHR, CSR, SH, CN, NCO, NCS, -N=C, vinyl, ethynyl, SiRR'Cl, SiHRR', SiR(R')2, N3, Cl, I, Br, SO2NHR, -N(R)-C(NR')-NR"R"' or -N=C=N-R; R, R', R" and R"' = H or 1-5c alkyl, or may also be 1-5C alkoxy or 1-5C alkanoyl when bonded to C or Si; A and B = R1-X and R2-Y, or together form a bond; m and n = 0-2; o = 3-8; p = 1 or 2; q = 0 or 1; provided that m+n+o = 9-29. USE/ADVANTAGE - Addn. of (I) to ferroelastic liq. crystal (FLC) compsns., or incorporation of (I) into the alignment layers of FLC display devices, suppresses 'switching-back effects' at high spontaneous polarisation values and also reduces the amt. of dopants required for pitch compensation in nematic and/or smectic C phases.
