An irrigating sleeve (20) for use in combination with the cutting tip (18) of a phacoemulsification handpiece (10) containing a base (22) having a nose (26) and a hollow interior (32); a tube (28) connected to the base (22) at the nose (26) having an interior surface (38), an open end opposite the nose (34) and a longitudinal bore (30) to receive the cutting tip (18) in communication with the hollow interior (32) of the base (22); and a rough texture comprised of random bumps (40) and pits (42) on the interior surface (38) of the tube (28) for reducing the amount of surface contact between the cutting tip (18) and the interior surface (38) of the tube (28) during tube (28) compression and for bathing the cutting tip (18) continuously in a lubricant.
