The sloping sided pit for holding refuse, liquids, organic substances and solvents such chlorinated hydrocarbons has its surface protected by layers with an bituminous binder and filling substances in proportions such that cavities will not form while hot. The maximum particle size of the filler is above 0.09 mm and the weight of the material smaller than this is a ratio to the whole weight of the filler so that the volume of the entire mixture is greater than the spaces between the coarse material. The material can include fibres for stiffening and the bituminose substance can include a polymer such as polyethylene or polypropylene. A further protective layer such as earth, sand concrete or a hardening resin can be added. The protective layer pref. contain expoxy resin or a mixt. of epoxy resin and tar.
