Grinding machine for shaping and profiling workpiece e.g. toothed wheel - uses computer to redress grinding wheel controlled by differences between stored profile and measured workpiece profile

The machine holds the workpiece on a horizontal mounting. The grinding wheel with a vertical spindle is mounted on a slide with a feed adjustment. There is a tool for dressing the wheel, a sensor to measure the cut on the workpiece and a computer (10) to control the cut in comparison to stored data. The theoretical grinding profile is obtained and stored while the grinding wheel is being dressed and then a pilot profile is ground on the workpiece. This is measured with the sensor and compared with the theoretical profile. The grinding wheel is redressed according to the computed differences and the workpiece is reground. ADVANTAGE - Efficient process to get good quality control of finished workpieces.
