A fine-grain oxide powder, in particular based on MgO, with a maximum degree of hydration of 10% by weight, in which the individual oxide particles are provided with a thin coating inhibiting further hydration by spray drying an aqueous suspension of the oxide powder and a coating agent. The coating agent may be a carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof.
