A rectangular opening in a sloping roof (12) is fitted with a cover which is made in two parts (16,18). One part (16) is hinged to the upper edge of the opening (20) whilst the other part (18) is hinged to the lower edge of the opening. The lower part can be held in a fixed position when open and so enables the opening and the covers to form a temporary balcony. The two parts of the cover have their outside surfaces covered with roof tiles and the lower edge of the upper part overlaps the upper edge of the lower part when both parts are in their closed positions.
