The grinding of a dispersion of solid particles in a pasty viscous mass, e.g. a chocolate paste, is effected in a two-high rolling mill stand, followed by a five-high rolling mill with floating rolls. To control the final layer thickness, e.g. to reduce it at the last roll gap of the five-high rolling mill, the roll gap of the preceding two-high rolling mill is changed, e.g. it is increased and vice versa
