The appts. to give a non-contact measurement of the gap between two rollers, where one roller is fixed and the other has an adjustment movement, has a sensor for each roller (1,5) to measure the gap to the roller surface at a position (15, 16) which is a mirror of the measurement points (17, 18) at the grinding gap (6), formed on the movement path (19, 20) of the roller (1, 5) mounting points (7, 8) on the tangents (21, 22) round the roller mounting point (3). Two sensors are arranged in pairs to establish the parallelism of the two rollers (1, 5) near the ends of the paired rollers. Non-contact path movement monitors (13, 14) are the pref. sensor units. USE/ADVANTAGE - The appts., such as for rolling and milling steel or foil, has a roller gap setting which takes into account actual working conditions including temp. and pressure and the amount of roller wear.
