The profile cutting system is used for cutting out shapes in a number of stacked material layers (16) that are located on a table (12). The main working surface of the table is formed by a pattern of bristles (14). The material cutter (50) is supported above the table and can be moved in X and Y directions. The cutter is supported in a head unit (46) with a built in actuator (54). The head can move transversely on a slide in a bridge unit (22) that sits above the table. Guides on both sides of the table support the bridge and this can move linearly. Cutter changes can be obtained by moving the head to a position clear of the table. Sensors (74) provide input to the system controller (70) to position the head safely. ADVANTAGE - Provides safe and automatic movement to tool changing position.
