In the process according to the invention the degree of cationic polymerization in an alkyl ketene dimer dispersion is regulated by adding broken down starch to the dispersion, which starch has been substituted with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride or 3-chloro-2- hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride to a degree of substitution of 0.5-1.0.
