Described herein are a hydroxyalkylchitosan salt formed from a hydroxyalkylchitosan and an organic or inorganic acid; a production process of the hydroxyalkylchitosan salt, which comprises adding and dissolving a hydroxyalkylchitosan and an acid in water or an aqueous solvent and then allowing the hydroxyalkylchitosan and the acid to undergo a salt-forming reaction; and a cosmetic composition containing as an essential ingredient a water, alcohol or water-alcohol solution of the hydroxyalkylchitosan salt.
