The knife has front and rear faces at an acute angle, the rear one forming a support for the remaining timer after parting, while the front one deflects the plank. A thrust strip parallel to the knife edge bears against the timber before the parting position, and forms with the knife a gap through which the plank passes. The gap is followed by a support, forming with the front knife face a guide for the plank over a set distance. The support (30) is parallel to the knife edge (18) and in adjustable sections, whose movement towards the knife front face (14) can be limited by stops (44). They can be spring-supported (42). The stops can be adjustable together, so as to form a continuous straight supporting surface (32). The sections can be individually supported by coil springs, or alternatively by a common elastic bed.
