The vibration damping system uses a reference signal generator providing a reference signal dependent on the vibration frequency of the motor vehicle engine (4) combined with a vibration signal dependent on the detected vibration at a given location within the vehicle passenger space to provide a vibration damping control signal supplied to a vibration generator (11). Pref. the vibration within the vehicle passenger space is detected via a microphone (10), the vibration generator being provided by at least one loudspeaker. USE/ADVANTAGE - For reducing vibration noise within vehicle passenger space. Adapts well to changes in surroundings.
