For detecting the position of a magnetic element (5) having a field component (BZ) zeroing in at least one point in space, typically in a plane ( beta ), use is made of an array of elementary Hall-effect sensors (Si) aligned side by side in a direction (X) perpendicular to the field component in question and to the current (I) flowing through the elementary sensors. The elementary sensor (Sr) generating a zero output voltage therefore indicates the zero position of the field component and consequently the position of the magnetic element (5) in relation to the position sensor (1), so that the outputs of the elementary sensors provide a quantized numeric code indicating the position of the magnetic element. <IMAGE>
