A detent mechanism for securing the magnetic head (20) of a hard disk drive unit (10) above a landing zone (24) of a magnetic disk (16) when power to the disk drive unit (10) is terminated. The detent mechanism includes a first detent (74) which is attached to the actuator arm (26) and a second detent (76) that is mounted to the housing (12) of the disk drive unit (10). The detents (74, 76) have a pair of teeth (78, 80) that become locked when the actuator arm (26) rotates above the landing zone (24) of the disk (16). The detents (74, 76) are constructed to be flexible enough, so that the teeth (78, 80) may be separated when power is supplied to the drive unit (10) and the actuator arm (26) is rotated away from the landing zone (24). |
