<p>A preform cutting element (18), particularly for a drag-type rotary drill bit, comprises a thin cutting table (20) of polycrystalline diamond, a substrate (22) of cemented tungsten carbide, and a transition layer (21) between the cutting table and substrate, the cutting table (20), transition layer (21), and substrate (22) having been bonded together in a high pressure, high temperature press. The interface (23) between the cutting table (20) and the transition layer (21) is configured and non-planar to reduce the risk of spalling and delamination of the cutting table. The interface between the transition layer (21) and substrate (22) may also be configured, and various methods are described for manufacturing the element with the non-planar interface. <IMAGE></p> |
