The invention relates to the detection of objects in the outer region in front of a vehicle door (2) of a vehicle (1). For this purpose, the outer region of a vehicle is detected during the movement of the vehicle door by means of a camera (3) arranged on the vehicle door. By comparing a plurality of image data detected at different positions of the vehicle door, a precise spatial position of objects in front of the vehicle door can be determined. This allows the output of a warning signal or the hindrance or prevention of a further opening of the vehicle door in order to prevent a collision of the vehicle door with a detected object (10). In this manner, the vehicle door can be protected from damage in an inexpensive and efficient manner while the door is being opened.
