In a printing machine of the kind in which the lateral ink profile is adjusted by a plurality of adjustable ink metering devices, each of which is associated with a respective ink zone, a procedure for enabling continued operation of the machine subsequent to a failure of adjustment of one of said ink devices, comprises (either by operation of the serviceable device in isolation, or in combination with ink delivery adjusting means which are independent of said zonal devices). (a) bringing the ink delivery in the one associated with the failed device back to the desired value, (b) re-adjusting the serviceable devices to re-establish the desired profile. In a first embodiment, the rate of rotation of the ink duct roller is adjusted to match the ink delivery of the failed device to the desired value, and the other devices are subsequently re-adjusted. In a second embodiment the delivery of the failed device compensated by adjustment of the next neighbouring servicable devices, and the remainder of the servicable devices are iteratively readjusted to compensate for the previously readjusted devices until the desired ink profile is achieved. A combination of the two embodiments may be used.
