The valve consists of a tubular body (12) with a conical recess (14) which has an angle of taper of 10-20 and preferably 14 degrees, diverging in the direction of the gas flow and equipped with an annular thrust seat (22) at its inlet end, with an orifice (20) for the entry of exhaust gases. The valve is closed by a shut-off element (24) in the form of a rod (26) with a tip (28) of smaller diameter and a shoulder (32) which fits against the seat. The valve is actuated by a flexible elastic membrane (48) which has its outer edge fixed between two housing sections (42, 44) and its centre connected to the valve rod.One of the two chambers (60) formed by the membrane is connected to a low-pressure source, while the other (62) is connected either to the outside atmosphere or to a low-pressure source to produce a definite closure of the valve in certain engine operating modes and to improve its response time.The housing (44) surrounding the valve can have an inlet and outlet for circulating a coolant liquid to remove the heat created by the exhaust gases.
