Process for treating urban solid waste which consists in initially crushing (1) the waste that arrives from the collection vehicles, with a first drainage (3) of the percolate; in pre-drying (4) the crushed waste, with a second drainage (6) of the percolate; in compacting (20) the crushed waste; in compressing (30) the compacted waste to reach a waste density of 1.4-1.5 tons/cu m, with final drainage (31) of the percolate; in subjecting the compressed waste to thermal pasteurization (60) without combustion to stabilize the organic materials and destroy the microorganisms that produce fermentation; and in subjecting the pasteurized block to cooling (70), subsequently removing it from the mold and sending it to the landfill. <IMAGE>
