Tape cassette with a tape wound around a pair of rotating wheels, with the option of pulling the tape from the cassette, an expanding belt or rotating rollers being in contact with the surface of parts of tape wound round the wheels in order to remove air from between the layers of tape and to remove particles of dust adhering to the surface of the tape. By means of an arrangement according to the present invention it is possible for the planarity of the side face formed by the layers of tape wound round the wheels can be improved, and the drop-out frequency of the signal or an increase in the error rate can be prevented.
