Method and device for studies of mechanics of the respiratory system and the lung during mechanical ventilation

The method for studying the lungs and respiratory system involves modifying the flow regime to and from a patient at mechanical ventilation during a sequence of expirations and inspirations using analogue or digital signals supplied from an electronic computer system to a ventilator valve control. The modified flow regime causes a breath covering a volume range in part outside the volume range covered by breaths delivered at prevalent settings of the ventilator. This is achieved by deepening an expiration and enlarging the gas volume delivered during the following inspiration during which the flow pattern is modified to a desired wave form. The flow rate and pressure are measured in the tubing leading to and from the patient to be recorded by the computer system.
