The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder block (40,53) and a cylinder head (1) fastened to said cylinder block (40,53), said cylinder head (1) having a bottom surface (1b) for joining said cylinder block (40,53) and a top surface (1a) for joining a cylinder head cover (20), said cylinder head (1) being formed with an intake passage (5) and an exhaust passage (6) communicating with a combustion chamber (2) partially defined through the bottom surface (1b) of the cylinder head (1). The internal combustion engine has been improved in that the intake passage (5) and/or the exhaust passage (6) open onto the top surface (1a) or the bottom surface (1b) of the cylinder head (1), respectively. <IMAGE>
