An annular member (8) is provided to link the steering wheel (1) and steering column (6) of a motor vehicle, the member having a plurality of retractable teeth (9, 10) on its radially inner and/or outer surfaces to engage respective slots or grooves in the steering column or wheel. The teeth are retracted or extended in response to a numerically coded electronic security code being input at an electronics unit keypad which subsequently also fires the ignition system at a predefined sequence. The teeth may be located directly on the steering wheel body and/or the steering wheel column. The electronics control unit also may respond to inputs from voice recognition systems and/or finger-print pattern recognition systems.
