The parking lock release mechanism is for a transmission gearchange control unit. It has a release button (34) on a gear position indicator and console cover, and a release lever (48) connectable to the selection lever (10). The release lever is joined to the button via an intermediate member (44) and the member is so arranged that the button can be displaced across the width of the vehicle in relation to the lever. USE/ADVANTAGE - parking release button for an automatic transmission which can be placed in an optimal position relative to the gear selection lever.
