<p>An aq. aerosol coating compsn. comprises a blend of: (a) a thermoplastic acrylic polymer solubilised in an aq. soln. of a monohydric alcohol to form a solubilised acrylic soln.; with (b) a controlling amt. of a water-based acrylic polymer for providing an increased deg. of gloss and alkali resistance. The thermoplastic acrylic polymer has a wt. average mol.wt. (Mw) of 105,000-200,000; an acid number of 2-12 and is polymerised from ethylenically unsatd. monomers. The water-based acrylic polymer is polymerised from ethylenically unsatd. monomers and comprises a water-sol. acrylic polymer and/or a water-reducible acrylic polymer. Also claimed are: (1) a coating of the above compsn. on the surface of a substrate; (2) a method of producing an aq. coating compsn. comprising: (i) adding a monohydric alcohol to water to form an aq. soln.; (ii) solubilising in the soln. a thermoplastic acrylic polymer as above; (iii) blending a controlled amt. of a water-based acrylic polymer of ethylenically unsatd. monomers with the acylic soln. to provide a coating formed from the compsn. with an increased deg. of gloss and alkali resistance; (3) an aq. coating compsn. as above except that the type of water-based acrylic polymer is not specified; and (4) a method of producing a coating on a substrate comprising preparing a coating compsn. by method (2) above, applying the coating to a substrate and drying it.</p> |
