Appts. to convert solid or liquid vegetable waste matter into a fertiliser has a culture chamber (18) to take the mixed waste (11) for biodegrading. The matter is initially treated (15) with bacteria, cinders, trace elements and micro-organisms, and mixed with water (13). In the chamber (18), the material is exposed to oxygen (19), nitrogen (20), steam (21) and heat (22). A liquid fertiliser is produced by pressing (25) and a solid fertiliser by drying (24).
