The variable height bed (1), which is surrounded by a metal frame (2), is supported by a lift linkage (3) activated by an actuator (4) controlled from a case (5). The lift comprises a chassis (6) to which is fixed the lift by a lever (7) and connecting rods (8) which pivot on the metal frame as the bed is raised or lowered. A wooden side panel hiding the bed, is fixed on each side of the movable metal frame. A wooden headboard and foot board are fixed to the front and rear of the chassis. Fixings (12,13) are provided on the frame and chassis sides. Four retractable arms (14) which carry wheels (15) are totally folded and hidden behind the side panels when the metal frame is in the low position.
