A method comprising combining each object with a self-contained tag containing a power source (4) and a transmitter (2) controlled by a sensing device (7) to switch from a stand-by condition to an on condition in which the transmitter (2) transmits an alarm signal to a receiver after the sensor (7) has sensed a parameter representative of an unauthorised use of the object. Power is supplied to the transmitter (2) only when said parameter has been sensed and the tag has received an activating signal from a transmitter associated with the receiver. The method may be used in a large controlled space such as a superstore or the like, an office building or even an industrial facility.
