Gases are drawn (3, 4) from the crankcase (2), by engine induction, into the reaction (6), passing after heating (9) through the catalytic contact element (10). The treated gases continue (8, 11bis) into the engine air intake (12) for recycling. Opt., an exhaust gas duct heats the contact element, but in general its temperature depends on an independent energy source (1) - eg., a fuel burner or resistive heater in the gas flow, or a microwave generator acting on the contact element. A sensor-operated regulator (11) varies the temperature from 300 deg.C upwards to suit engine requirements. Catalyst contamination, detected by a pressure-drop sensor, causes it to raise the temperature above 600 deg.C, burning off the contamination and regenerating the catalyst.
