A method and apparatus (10) for applying granules to a coated asphalt sheet (13, 58) to form at high production speeds a variegated pattern having uniform edges between areas of different colored granules. Granules of a first color (15) or color blend are applied to spaced first areas (16) on a moving, tacky, asphaltic strip (13, 58) by dropping the granules (15) onto the moving strip (13, 58). The leading (35, 55) and/or trailing (36, 56) edges of each granule drop (34, 57) are trimmed off by cutting or deflecting to provide predetermined sharp leading (46, 65) and/or trailing (47, 68) edges to the first areas (16). Granules of a second color (19) or color blend are then deposited on the strip (13, 58) by dropping on tacky second areas (17) between the spaced first areas (16). If desired, one or both edges of the second color granule (19) drops also may be trimmed, the second color granules (19) may be deposited on only a portion of the tacky strip areas (17) between the spaced first areas (16), and additional color granules may be applied to the remaining tacky areas to form shingles with three or more colored areas.
