Apparatus for controlling a real time counter of a VCR is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a CLOG detector(30) for detecting a CLOG signal(CLOG), which is a signal for determining whether a tape signal exists or not, based on a radio frequency(RF) signal played from a head of a VCR drum; an ATF(Automatic Track Find) detector(14) for selecting one of four pilot signals contained at the RF signal to detect the ATF signal; a real time counter(9) for detecting a TF signal from a capstan motor; a displayer(10) for displaying a counting value from the counter(9); a control signal generator for generating a control signal to determine the operation of the real time counter base on the output signal from the CLOG detector(30), the output signal from the ATF detector(14), and a recording mode signal.
