The image signal reproducing device performs a muting about a reproduced image signal, and outputs a background color on a screen, when a serious noise occurs on the reproduced image signal or there is an omitted signal thereon. The image signal reproducing device includes: a background screen generator for producing a background screen signal when a stop or pause function is selected in a normal reproducing mode; a switch for a switching a reproduction signal from a recording medium and a background screen signal from a reproduction signal from the background screen generator; a controller for detecting a mode selection signal, and applying a switching signal to the switch; and a rest signal generator for generating a reset signal according to the switching signal, and applying it to the background screen generator. Accordingly, a temporary screen breakdown when switching a mode can be prevented.
