The envelope (17) of a diode laser fitted to a bubble level is contained solidly within a longitudinal support (3). The support and laser are located within the body (1) of the bubble level which has a base (2). The laser projects a beam along the axis (vv') and through an aperture (19). At the inboard end (8) of the support (3) sideways motion is prevented by packing pieces (11) and at the same end a vertical threaded rod (13) with spring (14) to take up play enables vertical adjustment by using a screwdriver (15,16). At the outboard end two horizontally opposed screws (5) allow side to side adjustment.
