A segmented mould for moulding and vulcanizing tyres comprises side shells (8,9) and radial tread-forming segments. A common mechanism opens and closes the mould and locks the side shells (8,9) and segments in their closed position during vulcanisation and releases them again when vulcanisation is completed to allow mould opening. Also claimed is are: (1) a complete moulding and vulcanising unit including: (a) the two axially moveable concentric side shells (8,9); (b) a tread ring of radially divided segments, which move radially during opening and closure; and (c) a mechanism for axial movement of the side shells (8,9) into and out of the mould closed position, where: (i) a radially moving locking arrangement (15,61) holds the side shells (8,9) in the closed position with the segments; (ii) a mechanism (17,19) moves all segments and the locking arrangement (15,61) inwards into a closed position where all segments contact each other and outwards again into the open position; and (iii) a controlled drive unit actuating segment opening and closure and the locking and releasing operations; (2) a vulcanising press for tyre moulding and vulcanisation comprising a heating table (1) and equipment for raising and lowering of one side shell (8) during mould opening and closure; and (3) a tyre manufacturing process involving: (i) locating a tyre preform in an open mould; (ii) closing the side shells (8,9) and radial segments and locking in position; (iii) vulcanising the tyre; and (iv) releasing the locking arrangement (15,61) and moving the side shells and segments outwards to allow tyre demoulding.
