Preparation of D-erythrose comprises contacting an aqueous solution of a gluconic acid salt with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a cobalt, nickel or ruthenium salt. Gluconic acid salt is preferably dissolved in water to give a 1-60% solution and 0.001-50 wt.% (w.r.t. gluconic acid salt) of a Co, Ni or Ru salt is added. A 30% solution of hydrogen peroxide is used in an amount of amount 1-500 mole % w.r.t. gluconic acid. Oxidation then takes place at 0-100 (preferably 10-50) degrees C at a pH of 2-12 (preferably 5-8). |
