A new process for the conversion of heavy hydrocarbon fractions with a ConradsonC content of at least 10, a minimum metal content of 50 ppm, asphlatenes C7 at least 1% and S at least 0.5%, is effected by the following stages :- (a) treatment of the charge in a hydroconversion stage in the presence of H2 comprising a triphase reactor containing a hydroconversion catalyst in a fluidised bed, functioning in ascending liqui-gas flow, with a means for withdrawal and supply of fresh catalyst in conditions giving a liquid charge with reduced ConradsonC, metals and sulphur ; (b) part of the hydroconverted liquid effluent from (a) is sent to an atmospheric distillation zone from which a distillate and residue are recovered ; (c) part of the residue from (b) is sent to a vacuum distillation zone from which a vacuum distillate and vacuum residue are obtained ; (d) part of the vacuum residue from (c) is de-asphalted by solvent extraction to give a de-asphalted hydrocarbon cut and residual asphalt ; and (e) part of the de-asphalted cut from (d) is hydrotreated in conditions giving a products of reduced Conradson C, metal and sulphur contents and, after separation by atmospheric distillation, a gaseous fraction, atmospheric distillate and a heavy liquid fraction.
