<p>Novel compounds of the formula (I) <CHEM> are prepared by oxidising compounds of the formula II X[CH2CHR<1>O]mCH2CHR<2>(OH) (II) where X a group derived from a nucleophile; R<1> is H alkyl or aryl; R<2> is alkyl or aryl; m is a number from 1 to 40. Oxidation can be effected by chemical oxidation (e.g. dichromate treatment), catalytic dehydrogenation or treatment with molecular oxygen. Additive suitable for use in lubricating oils or fuels, can be prepared by reaction of compounds of formula (I) with polyamines. These additives are preferably further subjected to hydrogenation before use. Fuel composition comprising these additives are described.</p> |
