The control device has a deflected operating control, used for increasing the power output of the drive unit in correspondence to the deflection of the operating control at a given rate of increase over an initial deflection path and at a greater rate of increase over a subsequent deflection path, for providing a kick-down control. A further rate of increase of the power output may be employed over at least one further deflection path for the power output operating control, e.g. the accelerator pedal.
