The invention relates to a gas generator for a safety device, especially a vehicle passenger restraint system, comprising a combustion chamber (4) which is contained by a combustion chamber wall (4a) and filled with fuel pellets (3), and an element for holding down said fuel pellets, located inside said combustion chamber (4). The inventive gas generator is characterized in that the element for holding down said fuel pellets comprises a discoid holding surface (1) with lattice holes which is pressed into the combustion chamber and connected to the combustion chamber wall in positive and non-positive fit. Said holding surface is pre-stressed and exerts elastic pressure on the fuel pellets, said lattice holes having a smaller diameter than said fuel pellets (3).
