FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing nickel-containing materials, which are mixed with carbon reducing agent taken in amounts from 15 to 35% of the weight of nickel-containing material. The thus obtained charge is fired and ashes are melted in presence of flux. Melt is tapped. After slag has been powered off, metal smelt is treated with oxidized nickel or chromium ore at ore/smelt ratio (0.8-1.8):1 or (0.4-0.8):1, respectively.
